ArchivalResource

Barber family papers, 1790-1935 and 1908-1935.

Chiefly papers and photographs relating to Cora Barber's high school days (class of 1916) in Vergennes, Vt., and her subsequent teaching career, also in Vergennes in the 1920s. Also includes photographs and memorabilia relating to events in Vergennes and Addison County, roughly the same years, including the dedication of the Memorial Bridge to the Veterans of All Wars (1934) and postcards (1912) from the Addison County Fair and two letters from soldiers in World War I. Includes some earlier family papers: land deed (1790) and survey (1803) of Barber's ancestor Samuel Lowe, of Addison, Vt.; two stereopticon views; and velvet autograph book that belonged to Barber's mother, Frances Nellie Smith Barber. A later addition of material to the collection includes folder of deeds from a number of families in the towns of Addison and Shoreham, including the Lowe (or Low), Barber, Spencer, Coats, and Smith families; wills of Joseph Barber and Joseph Spencer; minutes relating to adding a school in Addison to district 12, and other Addison town projects in the 19th century; autograph book of Cora L. Barber, daughter of Carmelous Barber; other family material from the 19th century; and two scrapbooks. The second scrapbook was originally an account book for the Addison County Agricultural Society, with dates ranging from the first half of the 19th century. Unfortunately only the last few pages are readable, the rest overlaid with newspaper clippings and magazine articles cut out by Cora Augusta Barber.
